We are about to start the new school year. For some of us this is just moving up a grade but for others it may be heading off to a new school or even moving from middle to high school. No matter how big or small it’s a transition worthy of some preparation.

·        Getting back in the “learning” frame of mind

Summers can be memorable and a much needed break for students to relax. Or maybe by now you’re already tired of being cooped up in your room and are ready to see your friends again. Either way you probably haven’t been learning as much as you were in school and it’s hard to get back into it again.

Getting back into the frame of mind can be done in a variety of ways. Maybe this means completing the summer homework you were assigned, looking over old class notes, reading a book, or practicing math problems. Whatever it is it can be useful to exercise your brain before delving into a new semester.

·        Start off strong but don’t feel bad if you fall behind?

At the beginning of the year set academic and personal goals for yourself and follow them.

Maybe you want to “get better grades.” Though this is a good goal to have, it is not easy to achieve. Instead, you may want to break down what is required of you in order to get better grades and work on those tasks.

For example you could work on taking better notes in class, completing all your homework assignments or spending more time studying in order to achieve you ultimate goal of a higher grade.

And remember, if you fall behind try not to fall victim to an All or Nothing attitude. Don’t worry we all make mistakes and we should try to learn from them. When falling behind it’s best to not fall even further. First focus on completing today’s homework and then work on yesterday’s.

That said, I wish you the best of luck with starting the new school semester.
